"I’ve always liked the Henri Matisse quote:
“I don’t paint things, I paint the difference between things”. I like to borrow from the sentiment of this in my own statement of:
“I don’t paint places, I paint the essence of place”
Often my goal is to have the viewer recognise a feeling of place without specifics of the literal lay of land. Once these defining characteristics are despensed with the challenge is then to utilise multiple viewpoints, experiences and light conditions to convey a more emotional and spiritual perception of place."
