On September 8th 2020, an unusally powerful east wind developed and blew huge plumes of smoke from wildfires burning many miles to the east. The wind and the heat from the smoke turned the Newberg skies into a roiling, swiftly changing orange and red cloud burst that was described by many as “looking like Armageddon” or “Mars”. It was fantastically surreal, intimidating, frightening and profoundly beautiful all at the same time. I’ve never seen anything quite like it before in my life.
Newberg was right on the edge of the smoke. The skies straight up and to the south were wild red/orange clouds and to the north the sky was clear and blue. This left for some very unusual lighting dynamics. You can tell which direction I was facing in all of these photos because of those conditions.
Hats off to all of the firefighters and emergency responders during this insanely active fire season.
